President's Message June 2017

By Lorraine Borek, MSN, MEd, RN, CSN posted 07-18-2017 17:29

Dear colleagues,

On June 20, 2017 at the NJSSNA executive board meeting Anna Tupe handed me the gavel and I opened my first meeting as president.  Many members may not know much about me so I would like to take the opportunity to share a little about who I am and my experience.

I have been in nursing over 40 years.  In my past nursing life, I worked med/surg, ICU but most of my experience came from working in the Emergency room at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers, NY.  The story of how I ended up in the Garden State is for a different time.  In 1999, I made the transition into school nursing.  My first position was as a long-term sub, which eventually turned into a full time hire at Tuscan Elementary School in the South Orange/Maplewood School District.  I am currently the nursing supervisor for the Hillsborough School District, a J&J Fellow and the president of NJSSNA.  Currently I see no better way to use my time and talent than to support the nurses in my district and work collaboratively with the executive board of NJSSNA and school nurses within the state.

Under the leadership of Anna Tupe, NJSSNA has established collaborative relationships with stakeholders that share our vision of healthy children ready to learn.  There is much on the horizon and you should expect to receive regular communications and updates from the association.  NJSSNA will be developing a new strategic plan that will seek to meet the needs of school nurses in New Jersey.  An association is nothing without its members; therefore, your input will be vital as we move forward.  Individually we are strong but together our strength and capacity is magnified.

I look forward to meeting and working with you as I fulfill my role as president of NJSSNA.

Wishing you good health,

Lorraine Borek
President, NJSSNA
