HISTORY

The New Jersey State School Nurses Association was organized in 1937, incorporated in 1938 and has been affiliated with NJEA since 1955.

 

WHO MAY JOIN?

REGULAR MEMBERSHIP —A NJ registered professional nurse currently holding a NJ School Nurse Certificate, employed as a school nurse, school nurse supervisor, or as an instructor of school nursing at a college or university.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP —Any registered professional nurse who is not eligible for Regular Membership, but holds a permanent NJ School Nurse Certificate and is employed as a substitute school nurse. Any registered professional nurse who holds a provisional certificate and is employed as a school nurse.

STUDENT —Nurses matriculated in a college or university program leading to a permanent NJ School Nurse Certificate, who are not employed part or full time as school nurses.

RETIRED —members, upon retirement, shall be eligible for retired membership.

 MEMBERS-AT-LARGE —Those persons who hold a special interest or who are working with the Association and who do not fit into any other membership classification.

ADVANTAGES OF MEMBERSHIP

Newsletter— Published four times a year, it provides updated information on issues concerning the school nurse.

Programs —Timely topics are addressed at the American Academy of Pediatrics NJ/NJSSNA sponsored fall conference and at the annual NJ State School Nurse Conference in March. At the NJEA convention, a full program is provided (must also be an NJEA member to attend at no cost) and the President's Luncheon reservations are available to all attendees. The May annual dinner meeting is enhanced by an informative speaker.

Standards and Practices —Assistance is provided for members who are experiencing problems with district non-compliance in implementation of statutes and hiring practices.

Office —Information is readily available through the Executive Director regarding statutes, policies and position papers. This office is a central contact point for inquiries. Call (732) 462-9640 or write to NJSSNA, 261 Stonehurst Blvd, Freehold, NJ 07728.

Marketing— This committee functions as a link between certified school nurses seeking a position and county superintendents whose districts have openings in school health services.

Membership —Is on an annual basis, June 1st through May 31st. Membership applications are accepted through December 31st annually.
